Biographical note: Friedrich Wilhelm Horst Bockelmann (1930-98), former Economic Adviser
Horst Bockelmann was Economic Adviser of the BIS from 1 May 1985 until 30 April 1995.
He was a research assistant at the University of Cologne (banking chair) from 1954 to 1957. He entered service at the Deutsche Bundesbank in 1959 in the Money and Credit section of the Economics and Statistics Department. In 1964, he became the director of research and Deputy Governor-designate of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. In 1965, he was appointed for a three-year term as Governor of the Bank of Guyana. Mr Bockelmann returned to the Deutsche Bundesbank in 1968 and became, first, Head of the Money and Credit section, and then, from 1972 until 1978, Deputy Head of the Economics Department. From 1979 to 1985, he was the Head of the Statistics Department at the Bundesbank.
Mr Bockelmann held a PhD in Social and Economic Sciences from the University of Cologne.
