Biographical note: Gunter D Baer, former Secretary General
Gunter D Baer was Secretary General of the BIS from 1 September 1994 until 31 December 2004.
Prior to this, Mr Baer was acting Director General of the European Monetary Institute. From 1990 to 1993, he held the position of Secretary General of the Committee of Governors of the Central Banks of the European Economic Community.
Earlier in his career, Mr Baer worked as an economist for the International Monetary Fund, the German Ministry of Finance and the BIS, which he originally joined in 1977.
Mr Baer holds a PhD in economics from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and spent a year as a research fellow at Princeton University.
